On September 16, a group of local parents and children gathered to observe a live car seat installation demonstration, understanding that this knowledge could be crucial for their families' safety on the road.
The event, held at the Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA, was organized by the Community Investment for Families Department (CIFD) in collaboration with Congressman Jimmy Gomez, California State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, and the office of Assemblymember Miguel Santiago. The press conference and workshop aimed to educate parents and caregivers on child passenger safety as part of Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs from September 15-21.
"Educating our community on the importance of safe transportation practices is a key commitment of our department to Los Angeles' children and families," said CIFD General Manager Abigail R. Marquez. "This event allows us to speak to Angelenos about traffic safety and demonstrate life-saving practices."
CIFD Assistant General Manager Veronica McDonnell shared her challenges with safely securing her three children as passengers and highlighted some alarming statistics. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 756 children were killed in passenger vehicle crashes in 2022, and over 120,000 were injured.
Congressman Gomez, reflecting on his experience as a new father, recalled the responsibility he felt driving his newborn home from the hospital. His commitment to child safety continues to inspire him to help families across Los Angeles. "I'm proud to stand with the City of Los Angeles in supporting local efforts to promote child passenger safety. We must equip our parents with the tools and training they need to keep their children safe on the roads and in our communities," he said.
Following the speakers, CIFD’s Office of Traffic Safety staff led a hands-on demonstration of proper car seat installation. Families in attendance were also provided a limited supply of free car seats.
CIFD offers safety instructions throughout the year through its Child Passenger Safety Program and the Safe Biking and Walking Program, both funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety in partnership with the NHTSA.
