Bicycle Safety

The City of Los Angeles’ Community Investment for Families Department (CIFD) has received grant funding totaling $394,500 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, focusing on child safety seat education and funding activities emphasizing the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety grant will support a range of activities aimed at enhancing safety for cyclists and pedestrians. This program will emphasize the importance of sharing the road and will include:

  • Community bicycles and walking audits. Streets are known for high rates of fatalities and serious injuries among cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Participation in "Open Streets" activities that encourage walking and bicycling within the community.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian education programs aimed at teaching young people how to ride and walk safely.
  • Distribution of free helmets, wheel reflectors, and other safety equipment to community residents.

Child Passenger Safety Program

The Child Passenger Safety Grant will focus on educating parents, guardians, and caregivers in underprivileged communities about the correct installation and use of child safety seats. Key components of this program include:

  • Educational classes and child safety seat inspections.
  • Training and recertification programs for Child Passenger Safety Technicians.
  • Free child safety seats for low-income families.
  • Collaboration with neighborhood groups on community outreach initiatives to promote car seat safety in underserved areas.

Both grant programs are set to run through September 2026.

“The Office of Traffic Safety has supported our communities and provided vital information to help prevent accidents and preserve health for families across the City," said Abigail R. Marquez, Community Investment for Families Department General Manager.

“We’re proud of the extensive safety training our certified team provides and grateful for our continued partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety.”

Summary of Funded Initiatives

The grant funding will support a range of community outreach efforts, educational programs, safety activities for bicyclists and pedestrians, the distribution of child safety seats, and training on their proper use and installation. These initiatives are designed to enhance traffic safety and protect vulnerable residents, particularly in underprivileged areas.
