Nearly 200 graduating high school seniors, many of whom will become first-generation college students, were celebrated on May 19 at the third annual College Signing Day hosted by the City of Los Angeles’ Community Investment for Families Department (CIFD) and Youth Development Department (YDD).
Held at Los Angeles City Hall, the celebration recognized students who have committed to continuing their education at University of California campuses, California State Universities, Los Angeles Community College District campuses, and colleges and universities across the country, including University of California, Los Angeles, Columbia University, University of California, Santa Barbara, and many others. The event brought together students, families, City leaders, and community partners to honor the academic achievements and future aspirations of participating scholars.
This year’s celebration also featured participation from the Los Angeles Sparks. Christopher Rodgers joined CIFD General Manager Abigail R. Marquez and YDD General Manager Lisa Salazar in recognizing students affiliated with CIFD’s FamilySource System and the Olivia E. Mitchell Youth Council.
The event highlighted the City’s continued investment in youth development and educational opportunity through FamilySource Centers’ College Corner initiative, which provides mentoring, educational guidance, and assistance with college admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications.
FamilySource Centers continue to serve as a vital resource for Angelenos, offering comprehensive social services, educational support, workforce development resources, and family assistance through 19 locations across Los Angeles.
In the coming months, CIFD, YDD, the Department of Aging, and the Economic and Workforce Development Department will unite to form the City’s new Community Investment Department (CID), creating a more coordinated and accessible system of services that supports families, youth, older adults, and economic opportunity throughout Los Angeles.
